Get The Most Out Of Your Seed

Recommendations to get optimal results from newly sown grass seed.

  • Frequent and Light Watering: For the first two weeks after overseeding, water your lawn lightly multiple times a day to keep the soil consistently moist. Avoid sprinklers that shoot large droplets of water that might wash the seed around. Aim for 2-3 light waterings daily, especially during hot and dry periods. This helps prevent the seeds from drying out and promotes germination.
  • Seed Germination: You can expect to see grass seedlings germinate in about 7-14 days, depending on weather conditions. Continue the frequent light watering routine until you have good grass coverage, typically within 4-6 weeks.
  • Transition to Deep Watering: Once your grass has reached a height of around 2 inches, transition to a deeper and less frequent watering schedule. Water deeply (about 1 inch of water) once or twice a week. This encourages the roots to grow deeper, making your lawn more drought-resistant.
  • Timing: Water your lawn early in the morning (between 6 AM and 10 AM) to reduce the risk of disease and allow the grass blades to dry before evening.
  • Avoid Overwatering: Be mindful not to overwater, as excessive moisture can lead to fungal issues and shallow root growth. You can check soil moisture by inserting a screwdriver into the soil; if it goes in easily, your lawn has sufficient moisture.
  • Monitor Weather Conditions: Adjust your watering schedule based on weather conditions. During rainy periods, reduce watering, and during droughts or hot spells, increase it as needed.
  • Mowing: Once your grass reaches a height of about 3 inches, you can begin mowing, but be gentle to avoid damaging the young seedlings.

By following these watering instructions, you’ll give your newly overseeded tall fescue lawn the best chance for success. Remember that patience is key during the establishment phase, and your efforts will pay off with a beautiful and healthy lawn.
